NEW LAWYERS SECTION
Catie Coldiron Joseph, Chair
In January 2012, the KDC Board of Directors agreed to form several new committees, including a Young Lawyers Section. The KDC “YLS” is made up of Kentucky civil defense attorneys with ten or fewer years of practice. The core values of the YLS are to promote professional development, quality CLE programming, and networking opportunities for Kentucky’s young civil defense lawyers. At the March 14, 2024 board meeting, the name of this committee was changed to "NEW LAWYER SECTION" .
Each Fall since 2012, the YLS has organized and has presented three hours of CLE in conjunction with the KDC Fall Seminar, with the goal of providing practical advice to attorneys of all ages. CLE topics have included the young lawyer’s role in managing a file, tips for taking and defending depositions, tips for motion hour practice & brief writing, court reporting and in-house counsel panels, tips for evaluating your case for mediation ...
In the Spring of 2014, the YLS organized a very successful Deposition Boot Camp with 62 attorneys in attendance.
Along with hosting seminars, the YLS plans to create useful tools for its members including a blog of current issues and outreach programs. It also plans to increase knowledge and presence of the KDC in Kentucky law schools, with an emphasis on diversity. The YLS Section is also open to your ideas and suggestions for ways they can be of service to Kentucky’s civil defense lawyers.
All members of the KDC with no more than ten years in practice should consider being a part of this group. Membership is simple, with no additional fee, and provides you with a great opportunity to get involved in the defense bar and to meet other new lawyers throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
